Ram Narayan

Early Life

Ram Narayan, born on December 25, 1927, in Amber village near Udaipur, India, hailed from a family deeply rooted in music. His lineage included notable musicians, with his great-great-grandfather and great-grandfather performing at the court of the Maharana of Udaipur. Narayan's father, Nathuji Biyavat, played the dilruba and encouraged his son to pursue music despite initial concerns about the social stigma associated with the sarangi. At a young age, Narayan discovered a small sarangi and began learning its intricacies, eventually seeking guidance from renowned sarangi player Mehboob Khan.

Career

Narayan's professional journey began in 1943 when he auditioned for All India Radio (AIR) in Lahore, where he was hired as a sarangi player. His unique style and dedication led him to accompany prominent vocalists, including Amir Khan and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, which helped him gain recognition. After relocating to Delhi post-partition, he expanded his repertoire and began to establish himself as a solo artist. Narayan's performances were characterized by a blend of dhrupad and khyal styles, showcasing his innovative approach to the sarangi, which he popularized as a solo instrument in Hindustani classical music.

Personal Life

Narayan maintained a close bond with his brother, Chatur Lal, a tabla player who supported his musical endeavors. Despite facing personal challenges, including the loss of his brother and struggles with alcoholism, Narayan persevered and continued to perform. He married Sheela, with whom he had four children, including sarod player Brij Narayan and Aruna Narayan, the first woman to give a solo sarangi concert. Narayan's legacy includes numerous accolades, such as the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan awards, recognizing his contributions to Indian classical music. He continued to perform until his passing on November 9, 2024, leaving behind a rich musical heritage.
