Randy Newman

Early Life

Randall Stuart Newman was born on November 28, 1943, in Los Angeles, California, into a Jewish family with deep roots in the film industry. His father, Irving George Newman, was an internist, while his mother, Adele "Dixie" Newman, worked as a secretary. Growing up in a family of Hollywood film composers, including his uncles Alfred, Lionel, and Emil Newman, Randy was immersed in music from a young age. He spent part of his childhood in New Orleans, which influenced his musical style, before returning to Los Angeles, where he graduated from University High School. Although he studied music at UCLA, he left just short of earning his degree, only to complete it decades later in 2021.

Career

Newman's career as a professional songwriter began at the age of 17, with his first single, "Golden Gridiron Boy," released in 1962. Although it flopped, he quickly found success writing for other artists, including hits for Gene Pitney and Cilla Black. His unique blend of Americana-inspired songs, often delivered with a satirical edge, set him apart in the music scene. Over the years, he released numerous acclaimed albums, including "Sail Away," "Good Old Boys," and "Little Criminals." Since the 1990s, Newman has also made a name for himself in film scoring, particularly with Disney and Pixar, contributing memorable songs to beloved films like "Monsters, Inc." and "Toy Story 3."

Personal Life

Randy Newman was married to Roswitha Schmale from 1967 to 1985, with whom he had three sons. He later married Gretchen Preece in 1990, and they have two children together. Known for his political views, Newman endorsed Barack Obama during the 2012 election and created a satirical song about voting for white candidates. His contributions to music have earned him numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards, three Emmys, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
