Early Life

Rachel Agatha Keen, known professionally as Raye, was born on October 24, 1997, in Tooting, London. She hails from a diverse background, with a Ghanaian-Swiss mother who works as a mental health professional and an English father from Yorkshire. Growing up in a musical family, Raye was inspired by her parents; her mother sang in the church choir while her father served as the musical director. This environment nurtured her passion for music from a young age. Raye began writing songs at eight and performed her first piece at Southwark Cathedral. At 14, she was accepted into the BRIT School but left after two years, feeling constrained, and instead focused on honing her songwriting skills in studio sessions.

Career

Raye's music career took off in 2014 when she independently released her debut EP, "Welcome to the Winter," on SoundCloud. The EP caught the attention of Olly Alexander from Years & Years, leading to a contract with Polydor Records. Her breakthrough came with the singles "By Your Side" and "You Don't Know Me," both of which charted in the UK. Raye's artistry is characterized by a blend of genres, including contemporary R&B, pop, jazz, and soul. She has collaborated with notable artists and contributed to various projects, showcasing her versatility as a singer-songwriter and record producer. Her recent works include albums like "My 21st Century Blues" and "THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE," further solidifying her place in the music industry.
