Formation

Ricchi e Poveri is an iconic Italian pop group that originated in Genoa in 1967. The original lineup consisted of Angela Brambati, Angelo Sotgiu, Franco Gatti, and Marina Occhiena. The group's name, which translates to "Rich and Poor," was inspired by a humorous remark from songwriter Franco Califano, who noted their spiritual wealth contrasted with their financial struggles. They quickly developed a unique vocal style characterized by the harmonious interplay of their four distinct voices: bass, tenor, alto, and soprano.

Breakthrough

The band made their public debut at the Cantagiro festival in 1968 with the song "L'ultimo amore." They gained significant recognition after participating in the Sanremo Music Festival multiple times, with a notable performance in 1971 of the song "Che sarà," which was later covered by José Feliciano. Ricchi e Poveri also represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1978 with their song "Questo amore," finishing 12th among 20 competitors. Their music, which blends popular music, disco, and pop rock, has resonated with audiences, leading to over 20 million records sold worldwide.

Lineup Changes and Legacy

In 1981, Marina Occhiena departed to pursue a solo career, leaving the remaining members to continue as a trio. Despite this change, Ricchi e Poveri maintained their popularity, releasing numerous albums throughout the years, including "Mamma Maria" and "Voulez-vous danser." The group has seen brief reunions, with Gatti and Occhiena returning for performances in 2020. Their enduring influence on the Italian music scene is marked by their ability to adapt and evolve while retaining their signature sound, making them a beloved fixture in the industry.
