Richard Thompson

Early Life

Richard Thompson was born on April 3, 1949, in Notting Hill, West London, England. Growing up in a musically inclined family, his father was a Scotland Yard detective and an amateur guitarist, which influenced Thompson's early interest in music. He formed his first band, Emil and the Detectives, while attending William Ellis School, where he collaborated with future Stranglers frontman Hugh Cornwell. Inspired by rock and roll and folk music, Thompson's musical journey began in earnest after he discovered Buddy Holly in 1956, leading him to pick up the guitar in 1960.

Career

Thompson's career took off in the late 1960s when he became a founding member of Fairport Convention, a band that played a pivotal role in the British folk rock movement. His songwriting and guitar skills quickly garnered attention. In the 1970s, he married singer Linda Peters, and together they formed the duo Richard and Linda Thompson. Their album "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" was released in 1974 and marked a significant moment in his career, despite its initial commercial struggles. Over the years, Thompson has released numerous acclaimed albums, including "Henry the Human Fly," "Rumor and Sigh," and "Electric," showcasing his unique blend of folk, rock, and intricate guitar work.
