Richard Wright

Early Life

Richard William Wright was born on July 28, 1943, in Hatch End, Middlesex, England. He grew up in a musically inclined family, with his father serving as the head biochemist at Unigate. Wright's musical journey began at the age of 12 when he taught himself to play multiple instruments, including guitar, trombone, trumpet, and piano, while recovering from a broken leg. Encouraged by his mother, he focused on the piano and later took private lessons in music theory and composition. After a brief stint studying architecture at Regent Street Polytechnic, he met future Pink Floyd bandmates Roger Waters and Nick Mason, which set the stage for his illustrious career.

Career

Wright co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965, contributing significantly to the band's sound as a keyboardist and vocalist. He played a crucial role in the band's early success, appearing on nearly every album and participating in all their tours. His first solo song, "You're the Reason Why," was released in 1964, and he was known for his compositions such as "Remember a Day" and "See-Saw." Wright's musical style was heavily influenced by jazz, and he often improvised during performances, creating a unique sound that became a hallmark of Pink Floyd's music. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as a member of the band.

Personal Life

Wright's personal life was marked by three marriages, the first to Juliette Gale in 1964, with whom he had two children. After their divorce in 1982, he married Franka, but that union lasted only a decade. His third marriage to Mildred "Millie" Hobbs in 1995 produced a son, Ben, and inspired his 1996 solo album, "Broken China," which reflected her struggles with depression. Wright had a passion for sailing and spent time in Greece, where he owned a property in Lindos, Rhodes. He found solace in the sea, which provided a therapeutic escape from the pressures of the music industry. Wright passed away on September 15, 2008, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering figure in progressive rock.
