Early Life

Richard John Cyril Allen, known as Rick Allen, was born on November 1, 1963, in Dronfield, Derbyshire. He began his musical journey at the tender age of nine, playing drums and performing with various bands including Grad, Smokey Blue, Rampant, and the Johnny Kalendar Band. At just 14, his mother responded to an advertisement for a drummer for the band Def Leppard, leading to his joining the group on his 15th birthday, November 1, 1978. He dropped out of school shortly after to pursue music full-time, celebrating his 16th birthday with a performance at the Hammersmith Odeon, where Def Leppard opened for AC/DC.

Career

Rick Allen has been the drummer for the iconic hard rock band Def Leppard since 1978. His career faced a significant challenge in 1985 when he lost his left arm in a car accident. Remarkably, he adapted his drumming technique and continued to perform with the band, contributing to their most commercially successful era. Known affectionately as "The Thunder God" by fans, he has earned recognition as one of the greatest drummers of all time, ranking No. 7 on Gigwise's list.

Personal Life

Allen's personal life has seen its ups and downs. He was married to Stacy Lauren Gilbert from 1991 until their divorce in 2000. He later married Lauren Cuggino Monroe, a fellow musician, and has collaborated on her albums. A vegan, Allen has also faced challenges, including an incident in March 2023 when he was attacked in Florida, resulting in a head injury. Despite these challenges, he remains a beloved figure in the rock music community.
