Early Life

Rizwan Ahmed, known professionally as Riz Ahmed, was born on December 1, 1982, in Wembley, London, to a British Pakistani family. His parents emigrated from Karachi, Pakistan, during the 1970s. Ahmed's father worked as a shipping broker, and he is a descendant of Shah Muhammad Sulaiman, the first Indian Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. He attended Merchant Taylors' School on a scholarship and later graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, with a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. During his time at Oxford, he faced culture shock but channeled his experiences into organizing cultural events and studying acting at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

Music Career

Ahmed's music career began in his mid-teens, influenced by jungle and hip-hop. He co-founded the Hit & Run night in Oxford and was part of a jazz-house band called Confidential Collective. He gained recognition as Riz MC, winning rap battles and releasing the satirical track "Post 9/11 Blues" in 2006, which addressed the post-9/11 climate and was initially banned from British airplay. This track marked the beginning of his independent record label, Battered Records, and showcased his ability to blend music with social commentary.

Acting Career

Riz Ahmed's acting career took off with his role in the 2006 film "The Road to Guantánamo." He has since starred in various films and television series, earning accolades including an Academy Award and a Primetime Emmy Award. His work often reflects his commitment to addressing social issues, and he was named one of Time's most influential people in 2017. Ahmed also created the BBC series "Englistan," marking his writing debut.

Activism

As a practicing Muslim, Ahmed has been vocal about the negative stereotyping of Muslims and has engaged in activism for various causes, including raising funds for Syrian refugee children and advocating for the Rohingya community. He has used his platform to address issues of racial profiling and has called for humanitarian actions during conflicts, demonstrating his commitment to social justice and representation.
