Robert Fripp

Early Life

Robert Fripp was born on May 16, 1946, in Wimborne Minster, Dorset, England, into a working-class family. His mother, Edith, hailed from a Welsh mining family, and Fripp considers himself half Welsh. He received his first guitar at the age of eleven, which ignited his passion for music. After taking lessons and being inspired by rock and roll legends, he joined his first band, the Ravens, at the age of fifteen. Although he initially pursued a career in estate management, Fripp decided to become a professional musician, leading him to play in various bands, including The League of Gentlemen.

Career

Fripp's career took off in 1967 when he formed the band Giles, Giles and Fripp, which later evolved into the iconic progressive rock band King Crimson. Their debut album, "In the Court of the Crimson King," released in 1969, is considered one of the most influential albums in progressive rock history. Throughout his career, Fripp has collaborated with numerous artists, including David Bowie and Brian Eno, and has contributed to over 700 official releases. He is also known for composing the startup sound for Windows Vista.

Personal Life

Fripp married singer and actress Toyah Willcox on May 16, 1986. The couple has no children and has established a musical educational trust for children in their will. They have shared their love for music during the COVID-19 lockdowns by posting humorous cover videos on YouTube. Fripp is also a pescetarian and has interests in various philosophical and spiritual practices, including the Hermetic Qabalah and Wicca.

Legacy

Fripp's contributions to music have earned him recognition, including being ranked 62nd on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Additionally, an asteroid, 81947 Fripp, was named in his honor, highlighting his lasting impact on the music world.
