His father, James Thomas Mitchum, tragically died in a railyard accident when Robert was just a toddler, leaving his mother, Ann Harriet Gunderson, to raise him and his siblings alone. Known for his mischievous nature, Mitchum was expelled from school for his antics and spent part of his childhood living on a farm in Delaware.
