Robert Picardo

Early Life

Robert Alphonse Picardo was born on October 27, 1953, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Joe Picardo. He comes from a rich Italian heritage, with his father's family hailing from Montecorvino Rovella, Salerno, and his mother's family from Bomba in Abruzzo. Picardo graduated from William Penn Charter School in 1971 and initially pursued a pre-medical track at Yale University. However, he soon shifted his focus to acting, earning a bachelor's degree in drama. During his time at Yale, he was an accomplished singer and a member of the Society of Orpheus and Bacchus, one of the oldest a cappella groups in the U.S. He also played a significant role in the European premiere of Leonard Bernstein's Mass in Vienna.

Career

Picardo's career took off in the late 1970s when he made his Broadway debut in productions like "Gemini" and "Tribute." He gained recognition on television with roles in shows such as "Kojak" and "Taxi," and made his film debut in Joe Dante's horror classic "The Howling" in 1981. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of The Doctor in the "Star Trek: Voyager" series, a role that showcased his vocal talents. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Picardo collaborated frequently with director Joe Dante, appearing in films like "Innerspace," "Gremlins 2: The New Batch," and "Small Soldiers." He also had notable roles in the series "China Beach" and "The Wonder Years," making him one of the few actors to gain prominence on two shows simultaneously.

Beyond acting, Picardo's musical abilities have been a significant aspect of his career.
