Robert Trujillo

Early Life

Roberto Agustín Miguel Santiago Samuel Trujillo Veracruz was born on October 23, 1964, in Santa Monica, California. He grew up in Culver City, California, and was influenced by a rich musical environment, thanks to his mother, who adored soul music. Trujillo's early exposure to artists like Marvin Gaye and James Brown sparked his interest in music. He was particularly inspired by jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius, whose innovative style reshaped Trujillo's understanding of the bass guitar. He began playing in various backyard bands, covering iconic rock and metal songs from bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, and later pursued jazz studies with aspirations of becoming a studio musician.

Career

Trujillo's professional career took off when he joined the crossover thrash band Suicidal Tendencies in 1989, initially credited as "Stymee" on their album "Controlled by Hatred/Feel Like Shit...Déjà Vu." He remained with the band until the mid-1990s, during which he also collaborated with the band's frontman Mike Muir in the funk metal supergroup Infectious Grooves. After his time with Suicidal Tendencies, Trujillo played with notable artists such as Ozzy Osbourne and Jerry Cantrell, and he was a member of Black Label Society. In 2003, he joined the legendary heavy metal band Metallica, replacing longtime bassist Jason Newsted, and has since become the band's longest-serving bassist. His contributions to Metallica were recognized when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the band in 2009.
