Rupert Everett

Early Life

Rupert James Hector Everett was born on May 29, 1959, in England to a wealthy family. His father, Major Anthony Michael Everett, served in the British Army, while his maternal grandfather was Vice Admiral Sir Hector Charles Donald MacLean DSO. Raised as a Roman Catholic, Everett had a diverse ancestry that included English, Irish, Scottish, and distant German and Dutch roots. He experienced a unique childhood, identifying as transgender and dressing as a girl until the age of 14, after which he embraced his identity as a gay man. His education began at Farleigh School and continued at Ampleforth College, where he was taught by Benedictine monks. At 16, he moved to London to pursue acting at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, supporting himself through various means during this time.

Career

Everett's career took off in 1981 with his role in the play "Another Country," which later became a film in 1984. He gained further recognition with his performances in films like "My Best Friend's Wedding" (1997) and "An Ideal Husband" (1999), earning BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations. In 1987, he released his first single, "Generation of Loneliness," and sang in the film "Hearts of Fire," although his music career did not take off as expected. Despite this, he later provided backing vocals for Madonna and Robbie Williams. In the 1990s, he moved to Paris, where he wrote a novel and publicly came out as gay, a decision he felt may have impacted his career.

Personal Life

Throughout the 1990s, Everett had a notable relationship with television presenter Paula Yates, which he later described as an experiment rather than a reflection of bisexuality. By 2020, he was living with his partner Henrique, a Brazilian accountant, and they married in 2024. Everett has lived in various locations, including New York City and Central London, and has been active in local campaigns, such as opposing the establishment of a Starbucks in his neighborhood. He has also expressed evolving political views, shifting from a long-time Labour supporter to voting Conservative in 2010, citing concerns over immigration and taxation.
