Early Life

Robert Fitzgerald Diggs, known professionally as RZA, was born on July 5, 1969, in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Named after the Kennedy brothers, RZA grew up in a family that valued education and culture, spending summers in North Carolina where he was encouraged to read. He was introduced to hip-hop at the age of nine and began competing in rap battles by eleven. After a tumultuous youth that included involvement in petty crime and a serious charge of attempted murder, RZA was acquitted, which he viewed as a second chance to pursue his passion for music.

Career

RZA's music career began in earnest in 1979 when he was inspired by the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight." He formed several rap groups throughout the 1980s, eventually signing with Tommy Boy Records as a solo artist under the name Prince Rakeem. However, it was the formation of the Wu-Tang Clan in the early 1990s that solidified his status in hip-hop. As the de facto leader and primary producer, RZA's innovative production style, characterized by the use of soul samples and cinematic elements, has influenced countless artists and earned him recognition as one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time.
