Salif Keita

Early Life

Salif Keita was born on August 25, 1949, in the village of Djoliba, Mali, into the Keita royal family, which traces its lineage back to Sundiata Keita, the founder of the Mali Empire. Despite his noble heritage, Keita faced significant challenges due to his albinism, which was viewed as a sign of bad luck in Mandinka culture. This led to his ostracization from his family and community. Raised in a Muslim household, he was influenced by his Qur'an teacher's singing, which sparked his passion for music. In his teenage years, he decided to pursue a career in music, further distancing himself from his royal family, as this was against the occupational prohibitions of his status.

Career

In 1967, Keita moved to Bamako, where he joined the government-sponsored Super Rail Band de Bamako. By 1973, he became a member of Les Ambassadeurs, a band that would later evolve into Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux after they fled political unrest in Mali. Their 1978 album, "Mandjou," became a significant success in West Africa, and Keita's fame began to rise. In 1984, he relocated to Paris to reach a broader audience and embarked on a solo career, blending traditional West African music with European and American influences. His 1987 album, "Soro," marked his international breakthrough, solidifying his status as the "Golden Voice of Africa."

Legacy

Throughout his career, Keita has received numerous accolades, including the Victory of the Album of Traditional Musics or Musics of the World and the Kora Awards. He is also known for his advocacy for people with albinism, using his platform to raise awareness about the challenges they face. Keita's music continues to resonate globally, and he remains a celebrated figure in African music, inspiring future generations of artists.
