Sally Field

Early Life

Sally Margaret Field was born on November 6, 1946, in Pasadena, California. Growing up in a family with a strong connection to the arts, her mother, Margaret Field, was an actress, while her father, Richard Dryden Field, was a pharmacist and Army veteran. After her parents divorced in 1950, her mother remarried actor and stuntman Jock Mahoney, a relationship that Field later revealed was marred by abuse. Despite these challenges, Field pursued her education at Portola Middle School and Birmingham High School, where she was a cheerleader and developed her passion for performance.

Career

Field's career began in television, where she gained fame as the boy-crazy surfer girl in the sitcom "Gidget" (1965-1966). Although the show was short-lived, it became a cult classic through reruns. She then starred as Sister Bertrille in "The Flying Nun" (1967-1970), during which she recorded the album "Star of the Flying Nun". Despite facing typecasting, Field's talent shone through in various roles, leading to a successful career in film and television. Over six decades, she has received numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards, three Primetime Emmy Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Personal Life and Activism

Field's personal life has been marked by her advocacy for women's rights, particularly regarding abortion, a cause she is passionate about due to her own experiences. She has been married twice and has three sons, including actor and director Eli Craig. In her 2018 memoir, "In Pieces", Field candidly discussed her struggles with depression and the impact of her early life experiences on her career and activism.
