Salt‐N‐Pepa

Formation

Salt-N-Pepa, an iconic American hip-hop group, was formed in New York City in 1985. The duo of Cheryl James (Salt) and Sandra Denton (Pepa) met while working as telephone solicitors at a Sears store and became close friends. They were encouraged by their co-worker Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor, who was studying music production, to record a song for a class project. This collaboration led to their first track, "The Showstopper," which gained popularity after being played on a local radio station, prompting an official release by Pop Art Records.

Breakthrough

Their debut album, "Hot, Cool & Vicious," released in 1986, marked a significant milestone as it sold over a million copies in the US, making Salt-N-Pepa the first female rap act to achieve both gold and platinum certifications from the RIAA. The album featured the hit single "Push It," which peaked in the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 after its release as a B-side in 1987. This success solidified their place in hip-hop history and showcased their influence as pioneers in the genre.

Legacy

Throughout their career, Salt-N-Pepa released several successful albums, including "A Salt With a Deadly Pepa," "Blacks’ Magic," and "Very Necessary," further establishing their legacy in hip-hop and pop culture. Their music often addressed themes of female empowerment and sexuality, influencing countless artists and paving the way for future female rappers. The group continues to be celebrated for their contributions to music and remains a significant figure in the evolution of hip-hop.
