Early Life

Salvador Vilar Braamcamp Sobral was born in Lisbon, Portugal, into a formerly noble family. His parents, Salvador Luís Cabral Braamcamp Sobral and Luísa Maria Cabral Posser Vilar, nurtured his artistic inclinations from a young age. At just ten years old, he showcased his talent on the TV program Bravo Bravíssimo, and by the age of twenty, he was a finalist on Ídolos, Portugal's version of the Idols franchise, where he performed songs by renowned artists like Stevie Wonder and Leonard Cohen. Sobral initially pursued a degree in psychology at ISPA - Instituto Universitário de Ciências Psicológicas, Sociais e da Vida, but later shifted his focus to music, studying at the Taller de Músics in Barcelona.

Career

Sobral's music career took off with the release of his debut single "Excuse Me" in 2016, which was also the title track of his first album. His breakthrough came in 2017 when he won the Festival da Canção with the song "Amar pelos dois," written by his sister, Luísa Sobral. This victory led him to represent Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest, where he made history by securing the country's first win since its debut in 1964. Sobral's performance earned him a record-breaking 758 points, making him the highest-scoring winner under the current voting system. Despite facing health challenges, including a heart transplant in 2017, he continued to create music and perform, releasing several albums and singles, including "Alma Nuestra" and "Timbre."

Personal Life and Activism

In addition to his musical achievements, Sobral is known for his activism. He has spoken out on humanitarian issues, particularly regarding the European migrant crisis, and has used his platform to raise awareness and funds for various causes. He married Belgian actress Jenna Thiam in December 2018, and they have one daughter. Sobral is multilingual, speaking six languages, and has expressed a deep admiration for jazz and Música popular brasileira, citing influences from artists like Chet Baker and Caetano Veloso. His journey reflects not only his artistic talent but also his commitment to social issues and personal resilience.
