Sami Yusuf

Early Life

Sami Yusuf was born on July 21, 1980, in Tehran to Azerbaijani parents who had fled to Iran after the Bolshevik Revolution. His family moved to Ealing, West London, in the early 1980s, where Yusuf was exposed to a rich tapestry of musical influences, including Western classical and Middle Eastern music. He began learning various instruments, such as the piano, violin, oud, tar, and tonbak, and experienced a spiritual awakening at the age of 16 that deepened his commitment to Islam. Although he initially considered a career in law, he chose to pursue music, studying composition at the Royal Academy and Salford University.

Music Career

Yusuf's music career took off with the release of his debut album, "Al-Mu'Allim," in 2003, which became a massive hit in the Middle East and beyond, selling millions of copies. His follow-up album, "My Ummah," released in 2005, solidified his status as a leading figure in contemporary Islamic music, appealing particularly to younger audiences. Over the years, he has released several successful albums, including "Wherever You Are" and "Salaam," the latter achieving platinum status in Southeast Asia shortly after its release. Despite facing challenges, such as a controversial album release without his consent, Yusuf has continued to evolve as an artist, blending Eastern and Western musical elements.

Humanitarian Work

Beyond music, Sami Yusuf is known for his humanitarian efforts. He has performed benefit concerts and released charity singles, notably responding to the 2010 Pakistan floods with the song "Hear Your Call." His commitment to social causes led to his appointment as a UN Global Ambassador for the World Food Programme in 2014. Yusuf's music often reflects his values, aiming to inspire and unite people across cultures and backgrounds.
