Sarah Vaughan

Early Life

Sarah Lois Vaughan was born on March 27, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, to Asbury "Jake" Vaughan, a carpenter and musician, and Ada Vaughan, a laundress and church choir singer. Growing up in a religious household, Vaughan was immersed in music from a young age, taking piano lessons at seven and singing in the church choir. Her early exposure to popular music and local bands ignited her passion for performance, leading her to sneak into nightclubs as a teenager to showcase her talent.

Career

Vaughan's professional journey began in 1942 when she won the Apollo Theater's Amateur Night contest, performing "Body and Soul." This victory opened doors for her, leading to a stint with bandleader Earl Hines and later, Billy Eckstine. Throughout the 1940s and beyond, Vaughan became a prominent figure in jazz, known for her powerful voice and innovative style, earning nicknames like "Sassy" and "The Divine One." She released numerous acclaimed albums, including "Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown" and "In the Land of Hi-Fi," and won two Grammy Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Personal Life

Vaughan was married three times, first to George Treadwell, then to Clyde Atkins, and finally to Waymon Reed, a younger trumpet player. Despite her struggles with motherhood, she adopted a daughter, Debra Lois, who later pursued a career in acting. Vaughan was also an honorary member of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority and maintained a vibrant personal and professional life until her passing in 1990.

Vaughan's contributions to music have been recognized with numerous accolades, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and induction into the NEA Jazz Masters.
