Biography
Formation
Satyricon, a prominent Norwegian black metal band, was formed in 1990 in Oslo under the name Eczema by bassist Wargod and drummer Exhurtum. The band transitioned to black metal in 1991, adopting the name Satyricon. Shortly after, Satyr (Sigurd Wongraven) joined the lineup, and the band recorded their first demo, "All Evil." However, internal conflicts led to Exhurtum's departure, and Wargod eventually left the music scene to become a UN soldier. This left Satyr and guitarist Lemarchand to continue, with drummer Frost (Kjetil-Vidar Haraldstad) joining as a session musician for their second demo, "The Forest Is My Throne."
Key Releases and Lineup Changes
Satyricon released their debut album, "Dark Medieval Times," in 1993, showcasing their medieval themes and raw black metal sound. The band's lineup solidified with Satyr and Frost as the core members from 1993 onwards, with Samoth from Emperor briefly joining as a bassist and guitarist from 1993 to 1996. Their subsequent albums, including "The Shadowthrone" and "Nemesis Divina," further established their reputation in the black metal scene. In 1999, they released "Rebel Extravaganza," marking a shift towards a more rock-oriented sound. Over the years, Satyricon has continued to evolve, with albums like "Volcano" and "Now, Diabolical" pushing the boundaries of black metal.
Legacy
Satyricon is recognized for their significant contributions to the black metal genre, being the first Norwegian black metal band to sign with a multi-national record label. Their innovative approach has influenced many artists within and outside the genre. With a career spanning over three decades, Satyricon remains a vital force in the metal scene, with Satyr and Frost as the only official members since 1997, continuing to captivate audiences with their unique sound and artistic vision.

Satyricon is a Norwegian black metal band formed in Oslo in 1991. Satyr and Frost have been the band's core members since 1993, and its only official members since 1997. The band's first three albums typify the Norwegian black metal style. Since its fourth album in 1999, the band has strayed from this style and included elements of traditional heavy metal in their sound. Satyricon was the first Norwegian black metal band to join a multi-national record label (EMI).
