John Larkin

Early Life

John Paul Larkin, known to the world as Scatman John, was born on March 13, 1942, in El Monte, California. From a young age, he faced the challenges of a prominent stutter, which made his childhood emotionally traumatic. However, at the age of twelve, he discovered the piano, which became his refuge and a means of artistic expression. Two years later, he was introduced to scat singing through the records of jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, which inspired him to embrace music as a form of communication.

Musical Career

Larkin's musical journey began in the 1970s, with his first studio album appearance in 1981. He released his self-titled album in 1986, but it wasn't until he moved to Berlin in 1990 that his career took a transformative turn. In Berlin, he found a vibrant jazz scene and began incorporating singing into his performances. With the encouragement of his wife, he addressed his stutter in his music, leading to the creation of his breakout single, "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)." Released in 1994, this track catapulted him to international fame, selling over six million copies worldwide and reaching number one in multiple countries.

Legacy

Scatman John became a symbol of overcoming adversity, using his music to inspire others with speech impediments. He recorded five albums throughout his career, including "Scatman’s World" and "Everybody Jam!" before his untimely passing on December 3, 1999. His unique fusion of scat singing and dance music left a lasting impact on the music industry, and he remains a beloved figure in the world of jazz and pop.
