Shavo Odadjian

Early Life

Shavarsh "Shavo" Odadjian was born in Yerevan, Armenian SSR, Soviet Union, in 1974. At the age of five, he moved to Los Angeles, where he attended the Alex Pilibos Elementary School, an Armenian parochial school. It was here that he met future bandmates Daron Malakian and Serj Tankian. Growing up, Shavo immersed himself in skateboarding and music, drawing inspiration from punk rock and heavy metal bands like Dead Kennedys, Slayer, Black Sabbath, and Metallica, which significantly influenced his musical journey.

Career

Odadjian's music career took off when he began managing the band Soil, which included Malakian and Tankian. His persistence led to securing System of a Down's first local gig, despite the band lacking a demo tape. In 1995, he became the permanent bassist for System of a Down, a name inspired by a poem by Malakian. The band quickly gained recognition with their debut single "Sugar" and became known for their unique blend of rock, heavy metal, and alternative metal. Beyond his role as a bassist, Shavo has also directed and edited several of the band's music videos, showcasing his visual artistry.

In addition to his work with System of a Down, Odadjian has collaborated with various artists and projects, including directing music videos for other bands and scoring films alongside Hans Zimmer. His creative vision is evident in his directing style, which often incorporates surreal themes and innovative filming techniques.

Personal Life

Shavo Odadjian is married to Sonia Odadjian, and together they have three children. His Armenian heritage and personal experiences continue to shape his artistic expression and contributions to music.
