Early Life

Karl Johan Schuster, known professionally as Shellback, was born and raised in Karlshamn, Sweden. His musical journey began as a drummer in local indie rock bands, where he also showcased his versatility by recording all instruments for a black metal demo in 2003. In 2004, he transitioned to the metalcore scene as a vocalist for Blinded Colony, recording two projects before departing in 2007.

Career Development

At the age of 16, Schuster's life took a pivotal turn when he met renowned producer Max Martin through a mutual friend. Initially uninterested in pop music, Schuster's demos caught Martin's attention, leading to an invitation to record a demo in 2006. By 2007, he was signed to Martin's production company, Maratone. His collaboration with Martin yielded hits like Pink's "So What" and Britney Spears' "If U Seek Amy" in 2008. Schuster's talent was recognized when he topped Billboard's year-end charts as the No. 1 producer and songwriter in 2012, earning four Grammy Awards throughout his career.

Shellback's contributions to pop music have been significant, with notable productions including Ariana Grande's "Problem" in 2014. His work has garnered him prestigious awards, including the STIM Platinum guitar prize in 2012 and the Musikexportpriset, highlighting his impact on the music industry both in Sweden and internationally.
