Shelley Alexis Duvall was born on July 7, 1949, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Bobbie Ruth Crawford and Robert Richardson Duvall. Growing up in a family that moved frequently due to her father's career, she eventually settled in Houston at the age of five. Duvall was an artistic child, known for her energetic personality, which earned her the nickname "Manic Mouse" from her mother. Although she initially aspired to be a scientist, her life took a different turn after a brief stint in a sixth-grade talent show where she forgot her lines. After graduating from Waltrip High School in 1967, she worked in cosmetics sales and briefly attended South Texas Junior College before dropping out after witnessing a monkey vivisection.
