Bechet was one of the first important soloists in jazz, making his recording debut in July 1923, shortly after Louis Armstrong's first recordings. He briefly stepped away from music in 1938 to open a tailor shop in New York. Bechet was married three times, with his last wife being Elizabeth Ziegler, whom he married in 1951. Sidney Bechet's contributions to jazz were recognized posthumously; he was inducted into the DownBeat magazine Hall of Fame in 1968 and the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1983.
