Simple Minds

Formation

Simple Minds, a Scottish rock band, was formed in Glasgow in 1977 by school friends Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill, who were later joined by Tony Donald and Brian McGee. The band initially emerged from a cover band called Biba-Rom! and later transitioned into the punk scene with Johnny & The Self-Abusers. After a brief stint, they released their only single, "Saints and Sinners," before disbanding on the same day. Kerr and Burchill then reformed the group, solidifying their lineup with original members and expanding their sound.

Breakthrough and Key Releases

The band's early years were marked by a series of influential albums, including "Life in a Day" (1979), "Real to Real Cacophony" (1979), and "Empires and Dance" (1980). Their sound evolved through the 1980s, incorporating elements of new wave, art rock, and synth-pop, with notable albums like "New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84)" and "Sparkle in the Rain". The lineup saw changes, with members like Derek Forbes and Michael MacNeil contributing significantly to their sound until the mid-1980s.

Simple Minds' influence extends beyond their own discography, impacting bands like U2 and the Manic Street Preachers. Their album "New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84)" was particularly noted for its impact on U2's work.
