Siouxsie and the Banshees

Formation

Siouxsie and the Banshees were formed in London in September 1976 by vocalist Siouxsie Sioux and bassist Steven Severin. The duo met at a Roxy Music concert in 1975 and were inspired by the emerging punk scene, particularly the Sex Pistols. Initially, they performed at the 100 Club Punk Festival with borrowed musicians, including Marco Pirroni and Sid Vicious, and their set consisted of an improvisation based on "The Lord's Prayer". This performance led to their continued existence as a band, despite their initial intention to disband after the gig.

Lineup Changes and Key Releases

Over the years, the band saw several lineup changes. They added drummer Kenny Morris and guitarist Peter Fenton in early 1977, followed by John McKay on guitar and Budgie on drums in 1979. Notably, Robert Smith of The Cure contributed guitar during this period. Siouxsie and the Banshees released a series of influential albums, starting with their debut, "The Scream" in 1978, followed by "Join Hands" and "Kaleidoscope". Their sound evolved through the years, incorporating elements of post-punk, gothic rock, and new wave, with hits like "Peek-a-Boo" topping the US Modern Rock chart in 1988.

Legacy

The band disbanded in April 1996 but left a lasting impact on various music genres, influencing artists such as Joy Division, The Cure, and Radiohead. They are celebrated as pioneers of the post-punk movement and are recognized for their daring musical experimentation and unique style. Their legacy continues to resonate in the alternative music scene, marking them as one of the most audacious and uncompromising musical adventurers of their time.
