Early Life

William "Smokey" Robinson Jr. was born on February 19, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, to an African-American father and a mother of mixed African-American and French descent. Growing up in a poor family, he faced significant challenges, including the death of his mother when he was just ten years old. Robinson was raised by his older sister, Geraldine, and developed a passion for music early on, forming a doo-wop group called the Five Chimes during his teenage years. His uncle Claude, who was very close to him, gave him the nickname "Smokey Joe," which he later shortened to Smokey.

Career

Robinson's career took off in 1957 when he and the Miracles met Berry Gordy, leading to their signing with Motown Records. The group, originally known as the Five Chimes, became one of Motown's first acts and released their first hit, "Shop Around," which was Motown's first million-selling record. Over the next decade, Robinson produced numerous hits, including classics like "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" and "I Second That Emotion." He served as the lead singer, chief songwriter, and producer for the Miracles until 1972, when he retired from the group to focus on his role as Motown's vice president. Robinson returned to the music scene as a solo artist in 1973 and continued to release successful albums throughout the years, including "A Quiet Storm" and "Smokey & Friends."

Personal Life

Robinson's personal life has been marked by both triumphs and challenges. He married Claudette Rogers, a fellow member of the Miracles, in 1959, and they had two children together. However, their marriage faced difficulties, including Robinson's affairs, one of which was with Diana Ross. After a legal separation in 1974 and a divorce finalized in 1986, he married Frances Gladney in 2002. Robinson has also been recognized for his contributions to music, receiving numerous awards, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the National Medal of Arts. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
