Solomon Burke

Early Life

Solomon Vincent McDonald Burke was born on March 21, 1940, in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Josephine Moore, a nurse and pastor, and was consecrated a bishop at birth by his grandmother, Eleanor Moore, who founded Solomon's Temple, a congregation of the United House of Prayer for All People. Burke's early life was steeped in music and spirituality; he began preaching at the age of seven and was known for his charismatic delivery, earning the nickname "Boy Wonder Preacher." His upbringing laid the foundation for his future career in music, where he would blend his gospel roots with rhythm and blues.

Career

Burke's music career began in earnest when he signed with Apollo Records in 1955, where he recorded several singles, including his first, "Christmas Presents." Despite initial struggles, he gained recognition for his songwriting and performances, particularly with the single "You Can Run (But You Can't Hide)." Over the years, Burke released numerous albums, including notable works like "If You Need Me," "Rock ’n Soul," and "Don’t Give Up On Me." He became a pivotal figure in the soul music genre, bridging the gap between R&B and soul, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.

Personal Life

Burke's personal life was as vibrant as his career. He was married four times and fathered 21 children, including 14 daughters and 7 sons. His family life was complex, with multiple marriages and a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Burke was also deeply involved in community work, mentoring young musicians and supporting various charitable causes, including The Crippled Children's Foundation. He passed away on October 10, 2010, leaving behind a rich legacy in both music and community service.
