Sophie Monk

Early Life

Sophie Charlene Akland Monk was born in London, England, to an English father and an Australian mother. At the age of two, her family relocated to the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. Growing up, she attended several schools, including Helensvale Primary School and MacGregor State High School, where she graduated as school captain in 1997. Monk was trained in classical opera and even worked as a Marilyn Monroe impersonator at Warner Bros. Movie World, which would later influence her audition for a music group.

Music Career

Monk's music career took off in 1999 when she auditioned for the reality television series Popstars, which aimed to create a new girl group. She was selected to join Bardot, which became the first Australian act to debut at number one with their single "Poison" and self-titled album. Bardot enjoyed success with several top 20 hits before disbanding in 2002. Shortly after, Monk signed a solo contract with Warner Music Australia, releasing her debut single "Inside Outside" in 2002, which peaked at number five on the ARIA Singles Chart. Her debut album, Calendar Girl, followed in 2003, showcasing her growth as an artist.

Acting Career

In addition to her music, Monk ventured into acting, making her debut in the television film The Mystery of Natalie Wood in 2004. She gained recognition in the U.S. with roles in films like Date Movie and Click, and appeared in the HBO series Entourage. Monk's acting career continued to flourish with roles in various films, including the dark comedy Sex and Death 101 and the horror film The Hills Run Red.

Personal Life

Monk's personal life has seen its share of ups and downs, including engagements to Benji Madden and Jimmy Esebag, and a notable relationship with Stu Laundy after her appearance on The Bachelorette Australia. In 2022, she married Joshua Gross in a private ceremony. Throughout her life, Monk has faced health challenges, including a car accident in 2010 and a diagnosis of endometriosis in 2018, but she continues to thrive in her multifaceted career.
