Early Life

Solána Imani Rowe, known professionally as SZA, was born on November 8, 1989, in St. Louis, Missouri, and raised in Maplewood, New Jersey. Growing up in a diverse household, her mother, Audrey, was a former executive at AT&T and a Christian, while her father, Abdul, was a video producer at CNN and a Muslim. This blend of cultures and religions influenced SZA's upbringing, as she attended both Sunday school and Muslim school. As a child, she was affectionately nicknamed "Chickabee" by her mother, a name inspired by the film *Nell* (1994). SZA wore a hijab during her early school years but stopped after the September 11 attacks due to fears of bullying.

Career Beginnings

SZA's music career began in earnest when she met members of Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2011. After self-releasing her debut EP, *See.SZA.Run*, in 2012, she garnered attention for her unique sound and lyrical depth. Her subsequent EPs, *S* and *Z*, further established her as a rising star in the music industry. In 2013, she signed with TDE, becoming the label's first female artist.
