Biography

Early Life

Theodore Shaw Wilson, known as Teddy Wilson, was born on November 24, 1912, in Austin, Texas. Growing up in a family of educators, he began his music education at the tender age of six, initially learning piano before expanding his skills to the violin, oboe, and clarinet at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.

Career

Wilson's professional journey began in 1929 when he joined Speed Webb's band. By 1930, he had taken over the pianist position in Milton Senior's band, previously held by the legendary Art Tatum. His career flourished in Chicago, where he collaborated with jazz greats like Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines. In 1935, a pivotal moment occurred when he jammed with Benny Goodman, leading to the formation of the Benny Goodman Trio, which was notable for its racial integration. Throughout his career, Wilson recorded extensively, leading his own groups and contributing to numerous albums, including "Piano Moods" and "Mr. Wilson: The Fabulous Teddy Wilson at the Piano." His style, characterized by elegance and virtuosity, was influenced by jazz icons such as Earl Hines and Art Tatum, and he became known as a definitive swing pianist.

Legacy

Teddy Wilson's impact on jazz is profound; he was one of the first black musicians to perform prominently alongside white musicians, breaking racial barriers in the music industry. His contributions to the genre were recognized with accolades such as the NEA Jazz Masters award. Wilson's elegant playing style and innovative techniques helped modernize jazz piano, influencing generations of musicians that followed. He continued to perform and record until his passing in 1986, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire jazz pianists today.
