Early Life

Tessa Lynne Thompson was born on October 3, 1983, in Los Angeles, California, and spent her formative years between Los Angeles and Brooklyn, New York. She is the daughter of Marc Anthony Thompson, an Afro-Panamanian singer-songwriter and founder of the musical collective Chocolate Genius, Inc., and a mother of mixed Mexican and white heritage. Growing up in a creative environment, Tessa was influenced by her father's musical background and her younger half-sister, Zsela, who is also a singer and songwriter. Tessa attended Santa Monica High School, where she showcased her talent by playing Hermia in a student production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream." She later studied cultural anthropology at Santa Monica College, where she was inspired by lectures from Lisa Wolpe of the Los Angeles Women's Shakespeare Company.

Career

Thompson's career began in 2002 with her professional stage debut in a production of "The Tempest."
