Formation

The Bangles, an American all-female pop rock band, were formed in Los Angeles in 1981. The group originated from a combination of classified ads in the local paper, The Recycler, where Susanna Hoffs connected with the Peterson sisters, Vicki and Debbi. Initially, they were known as the Colours before renaming themselves the Bangs. The original lineup included Hoffs on guitar and lead vocals, Vicki Peterson on guitar and lead vocals, Debbi Peterson on drums, and Annette Zilinskas on bass guitar. This lineup was part of the vibrant Los Angeles Paisley Underground scene, which was characterized by its eclectic mix of rock influences.

Breakthrough and Success

The Bangles achieved significant commercial success in the 1980s with a string of hit singles. Their breakout song, "Manic Monday," written by Prince, was released in 1986, followed by the iconic "Walk Like an Egyptian," which became a worldwide phenomenon. The band's sound, a blend of pop rock and power pop, resonated with audiences, leading to their ballad "Eternal Flame" topping charts globally in 1989. Over the years, the group released several albums, including "All Over the Place" and "Different Light," solidifying their status as one of the most successful pop-rock groups of the decade.

Lineup Changes and Legacy

In 1983, Annette Zilinskas left the band and was replaced by Michael Steele, who contributed to the band's continued success until 2005. After a brief hiatus, the Bangles reunited, with Zilinskas returning to the lineup in 2018. The band's influence on the music scene remains significant, as they paved the way for future female rock musicians and continue to perform, showcasing their enduring appeal and legacy in the music industry.
