Formation

The Chainsmokers, an American electronic music duo, was formed in 2012 in New York City by Alex Pall and Drew Taggart. Initially, the group included Pall and former DJ Rhett Bixler, but after Bixler's departure, Taggart joined Pall under the management of Adam Alpert. Both members had backgrounds in music; Pall studied art history and music business at New York University, while Taggart was an intern at Interscope Records and had released original songs on SoundCloud. Their collaboration began with remixes of indie artists, leading to their first significant release, a remix of "Medicine" by Daughter, which topped HypeMachine in 2013.

Breakthrough

The duo gained widespread recognition with their 2014 hit "#Selfie," which became a top-20 single in multiple countries. This success was followed by a series of popular albums, including "Memories…Do Not Open," "Sick Boy," and "So Far So Good." Their music blends elements of indie, pop, dance, and hip-hop, drawing inspiration from artists like Pharrell Williams and Linkin Park. Despite their commercial success, they have faced criticism for their image and style, often being labeled as representatives of the "Silicon Valley bro" culture.
