Biography
Formation
The Coasters were formed on October 12, 1955, when Carl Gardner and Bobby Nunn left the Los Angeles-based rhythm-and-blues group, the Robins, to sign with Atlantic Records. The original lineup included tenor vocals from Leon Hughes, bass vocals from Bobby Nunn, baritone vocals from Billy Guy, and lead vocals from Carl Gardner. Guitarist Adolph Jacobs also joined the group until his departure in 1959. The name "The Coasters" was inspired by their move from the West Coast to the East Coast.
Key Releases and Lineup Changes
The Coasters quickly gained fame through their collaboration with the songwriting duo Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, producing a series of storytelling hits that became iconic in the late 1950s. Notable songs include "Yakety Yak," "Charlie Brown," and "Poison Ivy." In late 1957, the group reformed in New York with new members Cornell Gunter and Will "Dub" Jones, while Carl Gardner and Billy Guy remained. Over the years, the lineup saw several changes, with members like Earl Carroll and Ronnie Bright joining, and Carl Gardner's son, Carl Gardner Jr., taking over lead vocals in the 2000s.
Legacy
The Coasters' influence on the doo-wop genre is significant, as their records were frequently imitated, solidifying their place in music history. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, becoming the first vocal group to receive this honor. Their unique blend of rhythm and blues, novelty music, and storytelling has left a lasting impact on the music industry, ensuring their songs remain beloved classics.

The Coasters are an American rhythm and blues/rock and roll vocal group who had a string of hits in the late 1950s. With hits including "Down in Mexico", "Searchin'", "Young Blood", "Charlie Brown", "Poison Ivy", and "Yakety Yak", their most memorable songs were written by the songwriting and producing team of Leiber and Stoller. Although the Coasters originated outside of mainstream doo-wop, their records were so frequently imitated that they became an important part of the doo-wop legacy through the 1960s. In 1987, they were the first vocal group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
