The Darkness

Formation

The Darkness, a British rock band, was formed in Lowestoft in 2000 by brothers Justin and Dan Hawkins, alongside Frankie Poullain and Ed Graham. Initially known as Empire, the band garnered attention through their manager Sue Whitehouse, who had previously worked with Justin on music jingles. They quickly gained a reputation for their electrifying live performances, leading to a highly anticipated gig at the London Astoria even before signing a record deal.

Breakthrough

The band's debut album, "Permission to Land," released in 2003, catapulted them to fame, featuring hits like "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" and earning multiple awards, including the BRIT Award for Best British Group. Their unique blend of glam and hard rock, influenced by iconic bands such as Queen and Aerosmith, resonated with audiences, solidifying their place in the rock scene.

Lineup Changes and Reunion

After a successful run, internal tensions led to the departure of Poullain and the disbandment of the group in 2006. However, the original lineup reunited in 2011, bringing back Poullain, Justin, Dan, and Ed Graham, along with new drummer Rufus Taylor. This revival marked a new era for The Darkness, leading to the release of several albums, including "Hot Cakes" and "Pinewood Smile."

Legacy

The Darkness has left an indelible mark on the rock genre, celebrated for their flamboyant style and catchy melodies. Their influence can be seen in the resurgence of glam rock elements in contemporary music, and they continue to tour and release new material, captivating both old fans and new generations alike.
