The Incredible String Band

Formation and Early Years

The Incredible String Band, a Scottish psychedelic folk band, was formed in 1966 in Edinburgh by Clive Palmer, Mike Heron, and Robin Williamson. Initially, Palmer and Williamson performed as a folk duo before inviting Heron to join them, completing their trio. They quickly gained recognition, particularly after being signed by Elektra Records, which led to the release of their self-titled debut album, "The Incredible String Band," in 1966. This album showcased their eclectic sound and was awarded "Folk Album of the Year" by Melody Maker.

Lineup Changes and Key Releases

After Palmer's departure in 1966, Williamson and Heron continued as a duo, later expanding their lineup to include musicians like Rose Simpson and Licorice McKechnie. The band released several influential albums throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, including "The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion" and "The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter." Their innovative approach to music, blending various styles and instruments, positioned them as a significant influence on contemporaries like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin.

Disbandment and Reunion

The Incredible String Band disbanded in 1974 after a successful run, but they reunited in 1999, performing with various lineups until 2006. Their legacy endures, with their music continuing to inspire new generations of artists and listeners alike, reflecting their unique contributions to the psychedelic folk genre.
