The Kooks

Formation

The Kooks are an English indie rock band formed in 2004 in Brighton, England. The band's origins trace back to the BRIT School in Croydon, where members Luke Pritchard, Paul Garred, and Hugh Harris met. They later moved to the BIMM British and Irish Modern Music Institute, where they were joined by Max Rafferty. The idea to form a band emerged humorously when Pritchard and Garred were shopping for clothes, leading them to create a band inspired by their shared love for iconic artists like the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. They named themselves after a David Bowie song and played their first gig after impressing a venue owner with their hats, despite not having a demo ready at the time.

Key Releases and Lineup Changes

The Kooks gained significant attention with their debut album, "Inside In/Inside Out," which showcased their Britpop influences and was released in 2006. The lineup saw changes over the years, with Max Rafferty departing in 2008 and Paul Garred leaving in 2012. The current members include Luke Pritchard, Hugh Harris, and drummer Alexis Nunez, who joined in 2012. Their discography includes several successful albums such as "Konk," "Junk of the Heart," and "Listen," each reflecting their evolving sound and maturity as artists. The band has been noted for their dynamic musical style, drawing from various influences and genres, including alternative rock and indie pop.
