Biography
Formation
The Searchers were formed in Liverpool in 1959, originally as a skiffle group by guitarist John McNally and guitarist/singer Mike Pender. They took their name from the 1956 John Ford western film "The Searchers". The band evolved from an earlier group called the Army Generations, which McNally had founded in 1955. After several lineup changes, including the departure of original members, the group solidified with McNally, Pender, and lead singer/bassist Tony Jackson, initially performing as "Tony and the Searchers".
Rise to Fame
In 1960, the lineup expanded to include drummer Chris Curtis and lead singer Johnny Sandon, performing regularly at Liverpool's Iron Door Club. After Sandon left in late 1961, the band became a quartet and adopted the name The Searchers. They gained popularity during the British Invasion of the 1960s, achieving significant hits such as "Sweets for My Sweet", "Needles and Pins", and "When You Walk in the Room". Their success in the US market was notable, as they tied with the Swinging Blue Jeans for being the second Liverpool group to chart in the US with "Needles and Pins" in March 1964.
Later Years and Legacy
The Searchers continued to perform and release music until their disbandment in June 2025, with their final show at the Glastonbury Festival. Over the years, they released numerous albums, including "Meet the Searchers", "Sugar & Spice", and "It's the Searchers", contributing significantly to the Merseybeat genre. Their influence remains evident in the rock music landscape, and they are remembered as one of the key bands of the 1960s British Invasion.
