Iggy and The Stooges

Formation

The Stooges were formed in 1967 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, by singer Iggy Pop, guitarist Ron Asheton, drummer Scott Asheton, and bassist Dave Alexander. Iggy Pop, born James Newell Osterberg, was inspired to create the band after witnessing blues drummer Sam Lay and the raw energy of garage rock bands like the Sonics and the Kinks. The band quickly developed a reputation for their confrontational performances, often featuring Iggy Pop's wild antics, which included acts of self-mutilation.

Musical Evolution

Initially, The Stooges struggled to find commercial success, but their unique sound—a blend of punk rock and noise—laid the groundwork for the punk rock movement. Their self-titled debut album, "The Stooges," was released in 1969, followed by the critically acclaimed "Fun House" in 1970. Despite their innovative approach, the band faced challenges, leading to a breakup in 1970. Iggy Pop and Ron Asheton later reformed the group with new members, including Mike Watt and James Williamson, leading to the release of "The Weirdness" in 2007.

Legacy

The Stooges are widely regarded as a seminal proto-punk band, influencing countless artists and bands, including the Sex Pistols and the Ramones. Their raw sound and rebellious spirit have made them a cornerstone of punk rock history, with songs like "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and "No Fun" becoming anthems for generations of musicians. In recognition of their impact, The Stooges were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, solidifying their legacy as pioneers of the genre.
