Early Life

Thomas Neuwirth was born on November 6, 1988, in Gmunden, Austria, and grew up in the picturesque town of Bad Mitterndorf in Styria. From a young age, he felt different from his peers, grappling with his identity as a gay teenager in a small village. Despite the challenges, he found solace in his surroundings, stating that the mountainous area was a wonderful place to grow up. Neuwirth's early experiences included wearing skirts to kindergarten and school, although he later felt he could only express this side of himself in the privacy of his home. At 14, he moved to Graz to pursue his education with a focus on fashion, inspired by icons like Victoria Beckham.

Career

Neuwirth's musical journey began in 2006 when he participated in the Austrian TV show Starmania, finishing as a runner-up. The following year, he formed the boyband Jetzt Anders!, which disbanded shortly after. It was during this time that he developed his drag persona, Conchita Wurst, a bearded woman symbolizing self-acceptance and defiance against societal norms. The name "Conchita" was inspired by a Cuban friend, while "Wurst" reflects a German expression meaning indifference. Conchita first gained public attention in 2011 on ORF's Die große Chance, and after several performances, she won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2014 with the powerful ballad "Rise Like a Phoenix," bringing international acclaim to Neuwirth.

Personal Life

Beyond his artistic endeavors, Neuwirth has been open about his personal struggles, including his HIV-positive status, which he disclosed in 2018. He emphasized the importance of transparency and empowerment, sharing his journey to raise awareness and combat stigma. Neuwirth has crafted a fictional backstory for Conchita, claiming to be born in Colombia and married to a French burlesque dancer, using this persona as a shield for his private life. His contributions to music and LGBTQ+ representation have earned him numerous accolades, including the Amadeus Austrian Music Awards and recognition as one of the BBC's 100 Women.
