Biography
Early Life
Timothy S. "Ripper" Owens was born on September 13, 1967, in Akron, Ohio. He graduated from Kenmore High School in 1985, laying the groundwork for a future in music that would see him rise to prominence in the heavy metal genre.
Career
Owens began his musical journey as the lead singer for Brainicide, a thrash metal band from Akron, where he recorded three demo tapes before the band disbanded in 1989. He later fronted Winter's Bane, recording the album "Heart of a Killer" in 1993, and also performed with the Judas Priest tribute band British Steel. His big break came in 1996 when he was recruited by Judas Priest to replace the legendary Rob Halford. During his time with the band, Owens recorded two studio albums and contributed to live albums and a DVD. He co-wrote the song "What's My Name?" and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance in 1999 with the track "Bullet Train" from the album "Jugulator."
Owens' life inspired the 2001 film "Rock Star," which depicted a tribute band singer who joins the band he idolizes. However, Judas Priest distanced themselves from the film due to creative differences, and Owens expressed disappointment over the portrayal of his story.
Current Endeavors
Today, Owens continues to make his mark in the heavy metal scene, performing with bands such as KK's Priest, Spirits of Fire, and the Three Tremors, as well as leading "The Tim Ripper Monster Energy Big Band." Known for his powerful and operatic vocal style, Owens remains a significant figure in heavy metal music.
