This led him to Rome in 1932 to study singing under the renowned tenor Giulio Crimi. Gobbi's first audition was accompanied by Tilde De Rensis, the daughter of musicologist Raphael De Rensis, who later became his wife in 1937.
Operatic Career

His career took off when he sang Germont in "La traviata" at Teatro Adriano in Rome in 1937. His time as an understudy at La Scala in Milan during the 1935-1936 season provided him with invaluable experience, leading to his first performance there as the Herald in Ildebrando Pizzetti's "Orsèolo." In 1942, he debuted at La Scala as Belcore in Donizetti's "L'elisir d'amore," under the baton of Tullio Serafin, who helped him prepare for pivotal roles such as Scarpia and Rigoletto. Gobbi's performances at major Italian venues, including the Rome Opera and La Fenice in Venice, solidified his reputation as a leading baritone.
