Type O Negative

Formation

Type O Negative was formed in 1989 in Brooklyn, New York, by frontman Peter Steele, who had previously been part of the band Carnivore. Alongside Steele, the original lineup included childhood friends Sal Abruscato on drums, Josh Silver on keyboards, and Kenny Hickey on guitar. Initially, the band went through several name changes, starting as Repulsion, then Sub-Zero, before finally settling on Type O Negative. They signed with Roadrunner Records in 1991, which had retained Steele under contract from his previous band.

Breakthrough

The band's debut album, "Slow, Deep and Hard," was released in 1991 and showcased their unique blend of gothic and doom metal, featuring long, theatrical songs with dark themes. Their follow-up, "The Origin of the Feces," was released in 1992 and further solidified their reputation. However, it was their third album, "Bloody Kisses," released in 1993, that propelled them to mainstream success, achieving platinum status. This was followed by the critically acclaimed "October Rust" in 1996, which showcased a more accessible sound and further expanded their fanbase.

Later Years and Legacy

Type O Negative continued to release albums throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, including "World Coming Down" and "Life Is Killing Me." The band was known for their dark lyrical themes and unique sound, which blended elements of various genres, including alternative and industrial metal. After the passing of Peter Steele in 2010, the band disbanded, leaving behind a legacy as pioneers of gothic metal and a substantial cult following. Their influence can still be felt in the genre today, with their music continuing to resonate with fans around the world.
