Biography
Formation
Underworld, a British electronic music group, was formed in 1987 in Cardiff, Wales, by Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, who had previously played together in a band called the Screen Gemz. They were later joined by bassist Alfie Thomas, drummer Bryn Burrows, and keyboardist John Warwicker to form Freur, which released the single "Doot-Doot" in 1983. After Freur disbanded in 1986, the group reformed as Underworld, named after the 1985 horror film of the same name, and signed with Sire Records.
Key Releases and Lineup Changes
Underworld's debut album, "Underneath the Radar," was released in 1988, followed by "Change the Weather" in 1989. This initial lineup, known as "Underworld Mk1," disbanded in 1990 after a challenging stadium tour with Eurythmics, which left them in debt. Karl Hyde and Rick Smith continued as the core members, and in 1990, Darren Emerson joined the group, marking the beginning of "Underworld Mk2." This era saw the release of influential albums such as "Dubnobasswithmyheadman" and "Beaucoup Fish," solidifying their place in the electronic music scene.
Influence and Legacy
Underworld's innovative sound has had a lasting impact on electronic music and has influenced numerous video game composers, including Nobuyoshi Sano and Jesper Kyd. Their ability to blend genres like techno, synth-pop, and progressive house has made them a significant force in the music industry, with a career spanning several decades and a discography that includes notable works like "Second Toughest in the Infants" and "Barking." The group continues to perform and release music, showcasing their enduring legacy in the electronic music landscape.
