Early Life

Valentina Yevhenivna Lisitsa was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, in the Soviet Union, where she began her musical journey at the tender age of three. Her mother, a seamstress, and her father, an engineer, nurtured her talent, leading her to perform her first solo recital by the age of four. Lisitsa attended the Lysenko music school and later the Kyiv Conservatory, where she studied under Dr. Ludmilla Tsvierko alongside her future husband, Alexei Kuznetsoff. The couple won first prize at The Murray Dranoff Two Piano Competition in Miami in 1991, which marked a significant milestone in their careers.

Career

In 1991, Lisitsa and Kuznetsoff moved to the United States to pursue their concert pianist careers, marrying the following year. Their New York debut at the Mostly Mozart Festival in 1995 set the stage for Lisitsa's future success. She gained widespread recognition after launching her YouTube channel in 2007, where her performances, particularly of Chopin etudes, garnered millions of views. By 2012, she had signed with Decca and was among the most viewed pianists on the platform. Her discography includes notable albums such as "Valentina," "Virtuosa Valentina!" and "Chopin Recital," showcasing her versatility and artistry.

Personal Views and Activities

Lisitsa is known for her outspoken political views, particularly regarding Western involvement in Ukraine. She has participated in commemorative performances, including a concert in Mariupol in 2022. However, her political expressions have led to controversy, notably resulting in the cancellation of her performances with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 2015 due to her provocative social media posts. Despite the backlash, Lisitsa remains a prominent figure in classical music, celebrated for her talent and unique approach to performance.
