Robert Matthew Van Winkle, known professionally as Vanilla Ice, was born on October 31, 1967, in Dallas, Texas. He grew up moving between Dallas and Miami after his mother divorced when he was four. Influenced by hip-hop culture from a young age, he began breakdancing and rapping, earning the nickname "Vanilla" due to his race in a predominantly black group. This nickname evolved into his stage name, "Vanilla Ice," as he combined it with one of his breakdance moves, "The Ice." At 16, he wrote his breakout hit, "Ice Ice Baby," inspired by a weekend with a friend in South Florida.

Career

Vanilla Ice's career took off in the late 1980s when he began performing at local clubs and opened for major acts like N.W.A and MC Hammer. His 1990 hit "Ice Ice Baby" made him the first solo white American rapper to achieve commercial success, breaking racial barriers in the genre. Over the years, he released several albums, including "To the Extreme," "Hard to Swallow," and "Bi-Polar," showcasing his evolution as an artist. Vanilla Ice's personal life has been as colorful as his career. He dated pop icon Madonna for eight months in the early 1990s and married Laura Giaritta in 1997, with whom he has two daughters. The couple divorced in 2019. Ice has expressed his pride in his Choctaw heritage, although genealogical research has questioned this claim. He describes himself as politically neutral and has been involved in various legal issues, including a notable copyright infringement case in 1990.
