Early Life

Venantius Fortunatus, also known as Saint Venantius Fortunatus, was born around 530-540 in Duplavis, near Treviso in Veneto, Italy. His early years were marked by the Roman reconquest of Italy, and there is some debate among historians regarding his childhood location. Some suggest his family moved to Aquileia due to political unrest, while others argue that he remained in Duplavis, as he often referenced it in his works. In the 550s or 60s, Fortunatus traveled to Ravenna for his education, where he received a classical education in the Roman tradition.

Career

Fortunatus's literary journey took a significant turn when he moved to Metz in the spring of 566, aiming to establish himself as a poet at the Merovingian Court. His works reflect a deep familiarity with classical Latin poets such as Virgil and Horace, as well as Christian poets like Arator and Claudian. His poetry also indicates a probable knowledge of Greek literature, showcasing his broad intellectual influences. Throughout his career, Fortunatus became known as a hymnographer and a Latin poet, contributing significantly to the religious and cultural landscape of his time.
